Festival Description

Groundswell, Tauranga's inaugural Festival of Innovation, has been created to power the movement which is gathering pace and sparking collaborations, conversations and connections. From Monday 7- Sunday 13 August, locations across the city will come alive with a range of events to showcase how our businesses and people are leading the way through innovation.

WaitāX: The Innovator Next Door

Fri 11 August - 9.00am-2.00pm, Mount Maunganui Club

Whether you’re rangatahi or experienced business owner, WaitāX will inspire you to expand your innovation. This Callaghan Innovation sponsored event highlights Māori business innovation being fostered in the BOP.  

Guest speakers, young and mature Māori innovators from the region, will share stories of development and progress. This is followed by a hands-on workshop and the day ends with a presentation on pathways towards funding your ideas.

StartUp Weekend Tauranga

Friday 11 - Sunday 13 August, Basestation

Startup Weekend Tauranga is a 54-hour event designed to provide superior experiential education for technical and non-technical entrepreneurs.

Beginning with Friday night pitches and continuing through brainstorming, business plan development, and basic prototype creation, Startup Weekend culminates in Sunday night demos and presentations. Participants collaborate with like-minded individuals to create working start ups outside their daily networks.

Customers understand their experience of a service very well: the problem is that organisations often develop their services at arm’s length from their customers. The premise of service design is acknowledging that we cannot effectively design services without involving our customers.

Using a recent example where Cucumber worked with a local council to improve delivery of their animal services, we will introduce and provide an overview of Service Design.

Design The City Experiment

A group of people from organisations across the Western Bay of Plenty will take on a challenge set by Tauranga City Council.

The ‘Design the City Experiment’ allows participants to learn and practice innovation skills in a real world environment, and benefit the local community, through a series of design ‘sprints’. A team of local and national design thinking gurus will coach, train and support them through this challenge.

Beca Careers Day

Beca Careers day

Beca’s careers day, organised in partnership with Priority One’s Instep Programme, allows selected Year 12 & 13 students from 10 Tauranga/WBOP secondary schools to come into Beca Tauranga to explore a day in the life of an engineer, planner, architect and project manager. You will see their graduates in action, get a feel for university and study life, and learn about Beca’s projects in Tauranga and around the world.
